We are Ardo Christmas Trees!

Our Story

We are Jean and Roger Glennie of Hillhead of Ardo Farm; a family farm just outside Methlick in Aberdeenshire and we are passionate about all things Christmas! Our goal is to help everyone make special memories at this magical time of year.

Ardo Christmas Trees started at its current location in 2019 and has grown in size every year. There is the opportunity to pick your own living tree from the plantation next to the car park – ensuring the freshest possible living tree for you to take home. Our experienced staff are on hand to help you choose your perfect Christmas Tree; advise you on how to look after your Ardo Christmas Tree throughout the season and we even have ideas for after twelfth night!. Our mini Christmas village hosts a variety of crafters and local businesses, allowing you the opportunity to browse, and buy, unique and bespoke Christmas decorations, crafts and gifts. There’s something for everyone.

At the weekends we are pleased to confirm that there will be various caterers – a different each weekend. So, grab a hot chocolate, enjoy a walk in the sapling plantation next to the carpark, choose your perfect Christmas Tree and pick up some treats at the same time. This year, keep it local!

In 2020 we planted our first 2 acres of Nordmann Fir Christmas Trees here on the farm in Aberdeenshire.

These saplings were grown from Seed in Denmark where they have the best conditions for seed germination and an awesome team in the Nursery; producing amazing quality saplings for many tree growers throughout Europe.

These saplings were 3 years old already when they arrived here on the farm; and are now ready for sale. All our trees here on the farm are being grown to be sold as “living trees”. This means that they have been planted in a growing pot in 2020 and will continue in that same growing medium until ready for sale. The root-ball on these trees is well established and these Christmas Trees should be able to be grown at home well after the festive season. They range from 100 – 150cm in height, making them ideal for a smaller home, or for brightening your entrance door or hallway. These are very popular with flat owners and rented properties as well as being an integral part of the trend towards door-scaping.

People often ask “So you sell Christmas Trees, what do you do the rest of the year?”

Growing your perfect Christmas Tree is a year-long activity.
In fact, it takes several years to grow a Christmas Tree to the right height for your home. As contractors specialising in growing Christmas Trees, we see first-hand all the hard work that occurs every month: from clearing the land after harvesting, through to the specialist team arriving to plant the sapling trees.

Once established, both the trees and the soil need to be fed, so various nutrients and fertilisers are applied throughout the year.

As with all living things, every Christmas Tree is unique in shape and height.

The pruning team trim the trees annually from 3 years onwards to ensure that by the time the tree is ready for harvest, it is in the best shape for your festive centrepiece.

And then when the tree is at the best shape and quality, it is selected by hand and brought from the local plantation in Aberdeenshire, ready for you to take home with you.
