Looking after your Christmas Tree.

You’ve visited Ardo Christmas Trees

You’ve chosen your perfect tree for your home (and maybe a second one for the garden?)

What’s next?

When you visit Ardo Christmas Trees, we have all our trees un-netted and on display, so you can see and handle the trees before making your decision.

Let’s face it, choosing a Christmas Tree is a serious business and not one that should be rushed!

Once you have chosen your tree, we will re-net it so it is easier for you to take home. We will even help you put it on the roof rack if required.

When you get home, please try to resist the urge to put your Ardo Christmas Tree straight into the house and start to decorate it. The tree will not thank you for this. Instead, a little patience at the start will better ensure that your Ardo Christmas Tree remains green and beautiful for the whole season.

We recommend that once you get your Ardo Christmas Tree home, that you:

  • Trim your Christmas Tree trunk by 3cm. This will allow the tree to take in water and stay fresher for longer. We can do this on site before you take your Ardo Christmas Tree home, if you would like.
  • Immediately put your tree into a large pail of water (think of it in the same way as a bunch of flowers).
  • Keep your Christmas Tree outside in a sheltered location or inside in an unheated building such as a garage or garden shed for a few days.
  • This will allow the tree to acclimatise from being outside in the Aberdeenshire winter, to a slightly warmer location; before you take it into your home a few days later.
  • Un-net the tree to allow the branches to find their shape and relax before coming indoors.

When you are ready to take your Ardo Christmas Tree into the house:

  • Make sure you use a tree stand that has a reservoir that will allow for the tree to be standing in water at all times, and that is the correct size for the height of your tree. We do stock stands for up to 8ft trees if you need one.
  • Trees are thirsty things. An 8ft tree can “drink” up to 2 litres of water per day. Make sure you top up the water regularly in order to keep your Ardo Christmas Tree happy and healthy.

Positioning of your tree is vital.

  • Choose a spot for your Christmas Tree that is not too close to radiators or fires.
  • Christmas Trees require regular watering. It is important that the trunk is not allowed to dry out once the tree is in the house.
  • Check that you can access the tree stand water reservoir once the tree is in situ.
  • If there is a marked drop in temperature forecast; consider closing the curtains behind the tree overnight to prevent fluctuation in temperature, as this can also cause shock to your tree and result in needle drop.
  • If you plan to use electric fairy lights on your Ardo Christmas Tree, remember to check these are working before you put them on the tree! Make sure that the lights can be plugged in without the cable trailing across the floor and becoming a trip hazard!

Are Real Christmas Trees are still ok to bring indoors if you have underfloor heating?

  • Yes, you can have a real Ardo Christmas Tree with underfloor heating.
  • The living trees are ideal for this as they have a root-ball which helps keep the tree alive, providing it is regularly watered.
  • Cut trees will also be suitable in houses with underfloor heating. Make sure that you have a thick layer of insulation between the floor surface and the stand to prevent the worst of the heat transferring up to the tree. Regular watering is key to a happy and long lasting Ardo Christmas Tree.
  • Remember to mist your Christmas tree regularly to ensure that the needles don’t dry out too much.
