What's new this month at Team Ardo

Have you wondered what goes on here at Ardo Christmas trees during the year?

Sign up to our monthly newsletter, and find out more about what happens here during the other 11 months of the year, in order to produce your perfect tree; as well as all the other activities we carry out on the farm.

These last few weeks we have been carrying various preparation work. The Cancella Mulcher has been clearing the cut tree stumps and damaged or spent trees from the old plantations so that the planting team can get the new saplings established for the Christmas Tree Growing company.
On the farming side, the other tractors and ploughs have been busy preparing the fields for the sowing of spring crops. Here that is barley and oats. The wheat and oil seed rape seeds were sown in the autumn and will be the first to harvest in the summer. Unfortunately the geese, crows and pigeons also like the young shoots so we have spent a fair amount of time with various bird scaring techniques - some are more effective than others!

Aside from that, our accommodation hostel (#ardohostel) has had a deep spring clean and a spruce up, ready for the season ahead.

In addition to this, we have also had a team working on an estate near Keith, creating new estate roads for their fishing guests This has involved use of various machinery - the Cancella Mulcher is great for this work as well, tracked Caterpillar Digger, Stone Crusher, Murray Machinery  Road Grader, Heavy roller and the Fendt tractors. It's a lovely area to work in, and usually better weather there than here!

Other news is that we are again taking part in LEAF Open Farm Sunday. In 2022, this takes place on 12th June; so plans are afoot to make it a great day out for everyone.

Bring Back Service

Picture
Ardo Christmas Trees are offering a BRING BACK SERVICE.  This is a new and free service that we are offering at Ardo Christmas Trees. We hope that it takes off and helps prevent unnecessary wastage of the living trees. Most importantly, we need you to play your part in this, by looking after your living tree. Assuming that you have managed to do this, you have the option of replanting it either in your garden, or in a larger planter outside to grow naturally. We are now offering a third option. If you do not have the space or inclination to do either of the above, then we are offering a BRING BACK SERVICE. Living trees that are returned to Ardo Christmas Trees, will be replanted as wind breaks in the plantation here on the farm.

HOW TO DECORATE YOUR ARDO CHRISTMAS TREE

Picture
  • Firstly, let me start by saying that there is no wrong way to decorate a Christmas Tree!
  • The following are my ideas, they’re not any more or less valid than anyone else’s, but if it helps, then so much the better.
  • When choosing the position for your tree, make sure that it is close enough for the fairy lights to reach both the tree and the socket without being a trip hazard.
  • Set aside a time to decorate the tree. Trying to do this, whilst preparing a meal, helping with homework or cleaning is never going to work.
  • Optional is some background Christmas music. We like the tradit-ional carols for the tree decorating routine.
  • We always put the lights on first. We use an average of 100 lights per foot of the tree. So a 6ft tree = 600 lights. This may mean that you need to use 2 sets of lights – that’s OK as well.
  • After the lights comes the decorations. It may be that you have a colour or style theme; or you might prefer a colourful selection. Either is good. I’ve even decorated a tree purely with artificial ponsettia flowers!
  • Whatever decorations you have decided on, it is worth taking time at the start to sort them by size, colour etc and to attach hooks if required. Once you start decorating, you don’t want anything to get in your way.
  • We would always start with the tree topper. Star or Angel? It’s up to you. Or if you have more than one tree, why not have one of each?
  • Remember to use a step ladder or stool when reaching higher than yourself. You don’t want to have an injury over the festive season.
  • Next is the larger baubles. Space these around the tree at fairly regular intervals, making sure that there is variety in colour or texture as approp-riate.
  • Fill in the gaps with smaller décor-ations; and remember perspective: larger baubles where the tree is larger, & smaller towards the top of the tree.
  • Finally is the addition of your garlands. We like to use ribbon or threaded beads where we can. They can add a certain sparkle to your tree and wind them diagonally round the tree, starting from the top. Again, colour and style are completely a personal choice.
  • Take your time and enjoy the experience. Involve the family if you wish. Emmerse yourself in the spirit of Christmas.
  • Decorating your tree should be a celebration not a chore, so relax and enjoy.
  • Christmas should be about “Making Memories”; so make some more this Christmas.

HOW TO GET THE BEST FROM YOUR  CUT ARDO CHRISTMAS TREE.

Picture
  • Conifers from Ardo Christmas Trees are all grown from sapling stage in Aberdeenshire.
  • These trees have been grown in local plantations for between 5  to 9 years.
  • Once you have chosen your tree, we will net it for ease of transportation.
  • We realise that you will be excited to put up your Ardo Christmas Tree as soon as possible. However a few extra cares just now, will help your tree stay green and festive till well after the big day.
  • Once home, we recommend that you un-net your tree & keep it some where sheltered but unheated. A garage or shed would be ideal.
  • Keep it here for a few days to allow your tree to acclimatise.
  • At the same time, your tree will be thirsty. Think of it as a large bunch of flowers. So trim a few inches from the bottom of the trunk and emerge it in a large bucket of water.
  • Once your tree has become used to the change in temper-ature, it’s time to bring it into the house.
  • Choose a tree stand with a large enough reservoir to allow your tree to take in more water. A Christmas tree can drink a litre or more a day.
  • Choose your position carefully. Not too close to the radiator. If you have under-floor heating, con-sider putting an insulating pad below the tree stand to reduce the transfer of heat.
  • If the location allows, a water spray on to the tree occasionally will help prevent the needles from drying out. But, be aware of electrics and do not spray near them.
  • One final thing to help your tree stay green is to mini-mise exposure to extremes of temp-erature. If your Christmas Tree is next to a window, consider closing the curtains over at night so that the chill from outside is kept to a minimum.

HOW TO BE GREEN
AFTER CHRISTMAS; WITH YOUR
CONTAINER GROWN ARDO CHRISTMAS TREE.

  • These will help provide shelter not only for the saplings but also for the wildlife and birds on the farm.
  • By planting the living trees on the farm, we can do more for the climate crisis.
  • Trees, as you know, absorb carbon from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and the carbon is locked up in the roots, trees and even the soil itself.
  • Planting your tree whether this is at home, or back at Ardo Christmas Trees, is a great way of doing more to help our planet.
  • If you want to take part in this service, please get in touch with us via FB,  WhatsApp, message   or via the Website to make arrangements. Alternatively speak to us about this service when you buy your tree.
  • The plan is to have certain drop off days after the festive season; once we know what the uptake is.
  • Christmas should be about “Making Memories”; so make some more this Christmas.
