If you want to plant your living Ardo Christmas Tree in your garden after the festive season, NOW is the time to start the preparation.
Ardo Christmas Trees living trees are grown from sapling in the same pot, here on our farm here in Aberdeenshire. These trees have been in the same pot for several years and have developed a healthy root ball as a result. The irrigation pots they are grown in, are approx 20cm diameter and 20cm in depth.
What to do:
· Prepare a hole in the garden where you wish to plant your tree after the festive season.
· The hole needs to be at least double the diameter and double the depth of the pot your Ardo Christmas tree has been grown in. Do this now before the winter frosts arrive.
· Fill the hole with well-rotted manure and compost and fork it over to blend with the edges of the dug hole.
· Cover the prepared hole. Cardboard with some soil or compost on top is fine.
This will create a more friable soil for the tree to be planted into.
In spite of what you might think, given the recent weather, your tree will need to be watered in. Keep an eye on the water level and water your tree regularly in dry spells.
Be sure to protect the roots from sitting in water as a cold snap will freeze sitting water and damage the tree.
Don’t forget to feed your tree in the growing season. A rose type fertiliser is a good substitute to conifer based applications.
And lastly, do not crowd your Ardo Christmas Tree; it needs space to grow!
Then stand back and admire your choice of a living Ardo Christmas Tree.
